Babies join their families in a variety of ways and The Hamilton Midwives is experienced in caring for all types of families. We care for surrogate pregnancies and support both the birthing person and the new parents after the baby arrives. During pregnancy, our client is the pregnant person; their choices, wishes and plans will guide our care. Intended parents are welcome to participate in prenatal care at the invitation of the pregnant person. Midwives enjoy building relationships with all the folks in our new babies’ families. Midwives often meet separately with the intended parents to plan the baby’s care after birth. Babies born by surrogacy can be welcomed at home or in the hospital. We can arrange social work support if desired and when facilities allow, a private room in the hospital for the new parents to learn to care for their baby. Midwives provide all the standard care to the surrogate after the birth to support recovery, healing and emotional wellbeing.
Most intended parents choose to have midwifery care for the new baby but they are welcome to have their family doctor care for them if they prefer. We offer support and care for the first 6 weeks of baby’s life or until they return to their home community, if they are not local. Some babies go home to live abroad. We strongly recommend that babies stay in Hamilton to have care with our team for at least the first 1 - 2 of life especially if this is the first baby for the family. We enjoy supporting all our families in their journey of new parenthood.
